Whew you got me with that “need to make it meaningful.” There’s a whole lot wrapped up into that, but part of it is I feel a responsibility as a professional storyteller to tell the “right” story that will have the “right” impact. Next time these worries plague me, I’ll be thinking of skylights.
Absolutely! I totally get that. It can feel like such a weighty responsibility to me too. But there's something really powerful in realizing that the meaning gets *made*, rather than coming baked into a topic or experience. (Side note, I'm so glad you're here Lorraine!)
Oh, my word, the "not that, not that, not that" stammer in my head! Thank you for connecting the dots between the scale of my intended audience and the need to please such a huge, diverse collection of listeners! (I thought of Woo Young-woo trying to leap into the revolving door--"not that, not that, not that"...)
YES, I'm so glad I'm not alone with that voice!! And for me, you hit it with "the need to please." I feel like there is a whole conversation to be had about people pleasing tendencies in storytelling, and how we sometimes have to relearn the balance between what the audience wants, and what feels good for US.

Beautiful! "FOR NOW" what a great succinct prompt to let go of the heavy weight. And I especially love the skylight metaphor.
Thank you, Kat!!
